Sara Quits!!!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Today is the fiftieth year of Alaska's acceptance into the United States and they celebrated it with gusto. In Skagway it was a community celebration and the whole town was on Broadway for the parade and the fun and games afterward. The parade was capped off by "Sara Palin" walking down the parade route with an " I Quit" sign.
There was an egg toss, a three legged race, a tug-a-war and, again, a Ducky Race down Pullen Creek to Pullen pond. This race was shorter than the one on the Yukon last week. I didn't win but I did get a Ducky for a souvenir.
The fireworks were last night which I think was a swell idea. You have no idea how fireworks sound... the CRACK they make... when there are high mountains on all sides. What a noise!
We had a really good time last night and again today.

Along with the festivities last night we went to another Robert Service presentation that was sponsered by the Park Service. Buckwheat was his name and his recitation of the poetry was the best I have heard... that means that he recites Robert Service more closely to the way my Dad did when I was little. :)

Hi Judy -- I've been following your blog -- your trip sounds great! I just had to comment on on your 4th of July experience in Alaska. In 1984, my husband and I and our 3 young children took a trip to Alaska in a 19-foot motor home (not a RT) and used almost exactly the same route you and Sandy are taking. I remember being in Alaska on the Fourth to celebrate it's 25th anniversary of statehood but we must have been further north than you were today because it never got dark enough to have fireworks in the sky so they had all kinds of ground displays. I remember getting lots of these little grey or black things that expanded into snake-like crawly ash-snakes when you lit them --- my boys thought they were the greatest things! Also some kind of little fireworks (that you could buy anywhere) that you threw onto the ground and they "exploded" with a little pop. Ahhhh, thanks for the memories, Judy! We went to Dyea too. Maybe sometime we can meet and compare my old pictures to your new ones!
I leave in 2 weeks for my 10-week cross-country trip (I'm going east, not north) and I want to set up a blog like this too.
Happy travels!
